Fixed versus Growth Mindset
About 5 years ago, while working in a school during a Professional Development Day, I was introduced to the concept of a Fixed and Growth Mindset. Whilst the terminology was new to me, I realised the concept was not. My parents had inadvertently encouraged a Growth Mindset in me from a young age, and I was repeating the practice by already teaching it in classrooms. So what are Fixed and Growth Mindsets?
A Growth Mindset sets you up for success. Beliefs include: challenges are opportunities, you learn through mistakes, there are limitless possibilities, all skills and intelligence can be developed, you are not defensive about mistakes and life is about continuous learning. Examples of inner dialogue are:
"I've done my best on this, but next time I might try this to do even better",
"Everyone makes mistakes",
"I'm not sure I can do this, but I'll give it a go" and
"I'll take responsibility for my mistakes and learn from them"
A Fixed Mindset has self imposed limitations. Beliefs include: challenges are problematic, you have it or you don't, learning is curtailed or stopped, all skills and intelligence are fixed at birth and being quick to blame others for failures. Examples of inner dialogue are:
"If I fail, I'll be laughed at, so I'm not going to try",
"I don't know what I'm doing",
"I don't have the skills to do this",
"I don't want to hear that",
"I can't" and
"It's not my fault, someone else did that"
So which mindset are you? Having a Growth Mindset means you may have setbacks, but you overcome every obstacle. What if you have a Fixed Mindset? Well the positive thing about having a Fixed Mindset, is that it doesn't have to remain fixed. All behaviour is learned. Therefore through hypnotherapy, using regression and RTT tools and techniques, together we can find out where that Fixed Mindset developed.
